Dr. Agnes Zani

From her childhood days, she recalls that any kind of injustice to anyone made her hair stand on end. At the university, Agnes occasionally acted as the chairperson of her department and started the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Alumni Programme, which she has been chairing since. When Kwale residents threatened to boycott the 2013 elections during the infamous “Pwani si Kenya” unrest, she took it upon herself to offer free civic education to her community. Education tops the former lecturer of University of Nairobi main agenda during her term of service.

Walienda kule kumwabudu Mungu. Naona kutafika wakati ambapo watu wataogopa kwenda kanisani. Watu ... view
  • 18 Mar 2014 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I stand to give notice of a Motion of Adjournment of the Senate to discuss a matter of national importance under Standing Order No.33(1). This is the matter of the public universities where staff are now on strike. Many students are not able to access their academic institutions. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, the following Senators who are upstanding support this adjournment. view
  • 18 Mar 2014 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I stand to support this procedural Motion. This is a very good and encouraging move, that we reduce the number of days for publication of the Bills from 14 to 11. This will give us a chance to go into debating Bills directly. This will be good for the development of the counties and also to encourage that more Bills come up to this House for further discussion. The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposes only. A certified version of this Report can be obtained from the Hansard Editor, Senate. view
  • 18 Mar 2014 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I beg to move that this House now adjourn to discuss a matter of national importance and this is the issue of the stalemate that has led to the strike. Right now, all members of staff of public universities are on strike. Students have been left in a situation where they cannot attend to their lectures and are in hardship. The strike has actually entered its sixth day today morning. That means a lot is being lost in terms of resources, both financial and human. It has thrown the public universities into confusion. This is an ... view
  • 11 Mar 2014 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, for this opportunity to contribute to this very important Motion that has to do with civic education. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, as you might be aware, there is a lot of civic education that took place during the making of the Constitution, but very little has happened after the promulgation of the Constitution. I think that after the promulgation of the Constitution, it was just taken for granted that everybody understood the Constitution. A lot of effort was put before. I remember seeing in the newspapers the constitutional making process, appraisals and updates. People ... view
  • 6 Mar 2014 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker, for giving me this opportunity to contribute to this Motion. I think national security, especially where it has been achieved, is the best thing that a country can have. It is probably the reason why we have very many people migrating out of developing countries. Canada has been named as the best country to live in. The reason for that is that if you go to Canada, you will get houses without gates or walls; and people park their cars outside and leave the door open but nobody bothers to open the cars. This gives ... view
  • 4 Mar 2014 in Senate: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, thank you for this opportunity to contribute to this very emotive Motion this afternoon. Let me start by recognizing those whom we have not honoured enough. We should have recognized them enough. We have not done enough as a society to appreciate what they have done in terms of trying to ensure that we have a better Kenya. Thank God also that we have a new Constitution that recognizes the Bill of Rights and emphasizes the need for freedom, social, economic and cultural rights that are envisaged and must be exercised by everybody. I think it ... view
  • 4 Dec 2013 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, for this opportunity to contribute to this Report and support its adoption. I also want to commend the Committee for the work that they have done. They visited the various sites and have given us a comprehensive Report, which also gives recommendations of improving this very important sector. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, we had an opportunity also to visit one of the geothermal power stations and saw the work that they do and the potential for energy that is there. We have a good promise from GDC that the geothermal energy and how it ... view
