We have drought, banditry attacks, corruption and drug abuse. These are the four major problems that we have in Marsabit County. The same thing applies to Turkana County. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I have a request for a Statement on the cost of electricity in the country. I rise, pursuant to Standing Order No.53(1), to seek a Statement from the Standing Committee on Energy regarding the cost of electricity in the country. In the Statement, the Committee should- (1) Explain the reasons for the escalating cost of electricity in the country yet the country’s electricity generation capacity is on the upward trajectory, with the inclusion of solar and wind generated electricity to the grid.

(2) Provide details of contracts signed between the Government and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), detailing the implications of the contractual agreements on affordability of electricity in the country. (3) Explain why counties in Northern Kenya that are host to some of the IPPs do not benefit from the electricity generated in the region which is instead powered to other parts of the country.
