  • 16 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I do not think it is even very important to state which Ministries have responded. I said that 22 have responded and for those which have not responded, we have already sent them reminders. Every Ministry is going to have a Gender Desk. view
  • 16 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: It is! It is every Ministry and all the State Corporations. In fact, the Office of the President has responded! view
  • 16 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, to give specific information on every Ministry will not be possible here today. But I can avail that information later. The job of the Gender Desk in our office is to collect data on all women of Kenya. When a job is advertised they look for ladies who qualify for that job and sensitize them on that particular job. view
  • 16 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I doubt if the Department of Gender went to the appointing office there would be any difference. I think what we are doing is adequate. I would urge the hon. Members to give us three months and you will see a difference. The Gender Commission has also been reactivated and they are working on gender issues. view
  • 16 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, considering that the Kenyan culture is patriotism, we are lobbying and I hope our male colleagues will help us in this. But from what I saw on the Committees that were set up, I think we are also at fault. Do not just blame the Ministry. You, men, are also at fault. Since the Ambassadors are about to be appointed, we have already started lobbying. I hope that our male colleagues will be behind us, so that we can get, at least, 50 per cent of our women in the embassies. view
  • 10 Jul 2008 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir. I wish to congratulate the Minister for Youth and Sports because, being a first-timer, she has done a wonderful job. I wish to tell all the hon. Members here that we all need this Ministry. It is the heart and backbone of this country. I am very pleased to see that the Minister has sat down and thought very seriously. I am happy about the polytechnics that she has promised to give us in every constituency. The only thing that I would like to ask is: Can we move away from the traditions? ... view
  • 23 Apr 2008 in National Assembly: Thank you, Mr. Deputy 598 PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES April 23, 2008 Speaker, Sir. I must commend the hon. Member for bringing that issue up. It touches on everybody, especially on the eve of elections. That is when everybody panics and starts looking for voters cards and ID cards. If we are going the electronic way, we can register all the births. The Ministry should have a duty of tracking them down when they attain the age of 18 years. They should then be issued with ID cards and voters cards as they leave or after they do their Form IV examinations. ... view
  • 19 Mar 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, my name is Esther Murugi Mathenge, the Member for Nyeri Town. I wish to take this opportunity to, first of all, thank my Nyeri people for according me the honour to lead them for the next five years. In Nyeri, I can assure you, it is not a mean feat for a lady to be elected an MP. Therefore, I wish to thank them very much. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I wish to support the Address given by His Excellency the President last week. But before I do that, I would wish to thank the two ... view
  • 19 Mar 2008 in National Assembly: Most of the people in my community do not go beyond 5.5 feet. I think those are some of the historical injustices we are talking about. view
  • 19 Mar 2008 in National Assembly: So, when you go to the army or the police, you will find that they are a minority because of that historical background. view
  • 19 Mar 2008 in National Assembly: We want that requirement to be removed from the recruitment exercise. China - where I think most of the people are of my height - has the best army and police! So, I do not think height is a first requirement of making a good soldier. So, I would really want us to work on that issue, so that we can have it removed. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, we have talked about women and youth. When I go home, the men ask me: "What about us? Why do we also not have a fund that we can benefit from? Some ... view
