Florence Kajuju

Florence was at one point the vice chairperson of Law Society of Kenya (LSK). During her campaigns she overcame all odds to win against the strong Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) wave in her backyard. The impetus to seek a platform to represent the people of Meru was created by the pro bono cases she undertook in the years she practiced law in Meru.

  • 4 Dec 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Speaker, for giving me this opportunity to contribute to this Motion. I rise to oppose what has been presented to the House today. Much as I respect the Leader of Majority Party, I know that he is only discharging his duty as the Chair of that Committee. I know his heart and spirit may not be in what he has moved. If I may proceed, I am only judging because he is my neighbour. view
  • 4 Dec 2014 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, I stand guided. What I am saying is that as the Leader of Majority Party seconded the Motion, he clearly indicated – if I heard him right – that this was just the beginning, but they were in the process of a reconciliatory mode. This means this House is being called upon to engage in an exercise in futility. If the reconciliation process succeeds, these names will be brought back for approval for purposes of mending fences. If the parties are charting the way forward, in terms of how Members should behave, why can they not take their ... view
  • 4 Dec 2014 in National Assembly: I am a Member of the House Business Committee. One hon. (Dr.) Susan Musyoka is a very committed Member of the House Business Committee. Why is she being removed from the House Business Committee yet there is no accusation that has been levelled against her? Is it just because she is a woman? We are asking that any process that is being undertaken by whichever side of this House, it should take into account the commitment of a party in any process. Therefore, I submit that I am opposed to this Motion. view
  • 27 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Chairlady. This is a very important committee we intend to form. The composition that we have brought on board shows that we are going to have much more in terms of taking care of the interests of persons who have been deprived of liberty. When I served in the LSK, we used to have a committee called the Public Interest Committee. This is a committee that takes care of the interests of various persons, especially those whose liberties have been deprived. By bringing the Council of the LSK representation into the committee, they are going ... view

  • 27 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, I have had some personal challenges and that is why I do not have my card. view
  • 27 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker for understanding. I sit in the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs and I dare say that we have had challenges when we have been trying to look at various other Bills. However, I must commend the drafters of this Bill because it is one of the Bills that we found easy to go through and appreciate. This is because it was written in proper constitutional and legal language, unlike the other Bills that we are still looking at. As I served in various other capacities before I came to this Parliament, we ... view
  • 27 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: a matter of law, that any person who has been incarcerated gets the rights that he or she enjoys when outside of course subject to the limitations that are there. This is also going to ensure that the Government expands prisons. Most of the prisons that we have were built in the colonial years and are limited in terms of space. In Clause 12 of this Bill, it is going to ensure that prisons are able to create more space by construction of other institutions to ensure that persons who have been deprived of liberty enjoy their freedom. I, therefore, ... view
  • 27 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Thank you, hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for allowing me to comment on this Motion by our beloved President, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta. As it was said by the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki Moon, there cannot be development without peace; there cannot be peace without development. That is so very true because we have seen that the events that are happening in our society, as it were are not only killing the economy of this country, but are destroying the social fabric of human beings as we are. We know that our security depends on individuals to ensure ... view
  • 27 Nov 2014 in National Assembly: Should we continue with the kind of insecurity that we are experiencing today, it means that what they get as a county will not be there. So, we are calling upon ourselves as individuals to ensure that we take care of our security. We also call upon our security enforcers to ensure that they are more vigilant. I know Kenyans are resilient people and they are going to ensure that nothing kills their spirit. We have seen cases where our girls and our women are being stripped naked. This is part of the insecurity that we are speaking about. We ... view
