• 16 May 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I would like to thank Mr. Mwakwere for that answer. I am sorry that the Minister may not be aware of what is going on at that airport. I normally use that airport once a week and it is terrifying landing at such an airport. It reminds me of what happened to our people in Douala. I fear that the same thing might happen at Kisumu Airport if we are not very careful. Farmers in this country, particularly those in the east and west of the Rift Valley have taken tea farming seriously. The management of that crop and the factories must be taken care of completely by the Government. When these factories are constructed, they are annexed to an existing factory because they may not be able to vote when the KTDA meets. I am aware that, that task force finished its work. Could the Assistant Minister tell us when that report will be made public because it is in connection with the streamlining of management of the KTDA factories? view

I know the pain that these farmers are going through at the hands of the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) factories. Those factories are built by the farmers themselves. Farmers are now required to contribute, as you heard this morning, 50 per cent of the total cost of the factory. One single line of a factory is Kshs120 million. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, that aside, SACCOs handle a lot of the money for farmers, teachers and other Kenyans in the rural areas.
