  • 30 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker for the opportunity to contribute to this Motion. It is a very important one. Like my colleagues, I take these few minutes to express my condolences and those of my family to the families of Hon. Ken Okoth and Hon. Governor, Joyce Laboso. These are people I have known. I am one of the products of Joyce Laboso. She taught me communication at Egerton University. For those who went through Egerton University, we remember her as a lecturer who was very devoted to her job. She was very friendly to all the students. It ... view

  • 24 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: THAT, aware that the existing Kenya Diaspora Policy provides for the mainstreaming of the Kenya Diaspora into national development process in line with aspirations and goals of Kenya Vision 2030; noting that formal remittance from the Kenya Diaspora accounts for over three per cent of the country’s GDP channeled by an estimated three million Kenyans; noting that the contribution by the Kenya Diaspora to the country’s development goes much beyond the personal remittance to include increased trade links, better access to foreign capital markets, skills and technology transfer, diaspora investment fund, knowledge exchange among other enormous potential benefits; acknowledging that ... view
  • 24 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker for the opportunity to contribute to this very important Motion. I think this is one of the most well thought out Motions that this House has debated. I want to thank Hon. John Waluke for bringing this important Motion to this House to be debated. The trade deficit is a very important economic variable. When we talk about trade deficit, we are talking about many other aspects that affect the economy. We are talking about foreign aid, foreign direct investment, balance of payments, interest rates and currency valuations. All these issues are impacted by ... view
  • 24 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: the other sugar companies which are on their deathbed. We cannot be talking about the Big Four Agenda, particularly manufacturing, when we are watching as our industries particularly Mumias Sugar Company which was one of the leading tax givers in this country on its deathbed and very little is being done to revive that industry. This Motion also seeks to implement competitive export promotions strategies. We have several institutions that are supposed to be doing this work of promoting export. We have Export Promotion Council, Export Processing Zones and the Brand Kenya. We hear very little of these institutions. It ... view
  • 24 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: people at the Ministry: Hon. Mukhisa Kituyi, our current President Hon. Uhuru and Hon. Wetang’ula. We saw a lot of vibrancy in the Ministry. What has happened to the Ministry? It is not doing much. We cannot improve our trade deficit if we do not have a functional trade ministry. view
  • 4 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, the aviation industry is critical in the country because it contributes about US$3.2 billion to the economy. Therefore, it is a very critical industry to our economy which we cannot see die as we watch. So, I commend the Committee for the good work they have done by coming up with the observations they have made in the Report. view
  • 4 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: The aviation industry is facing a lot of challenges like competition from other airports and airlines within the region. The competitiveness of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is declining compared to other regional airports like in Ethiopia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and some in Africa. Reduced investments in the aviation industry, profitability of JKIA and the decline and slow growth of passenger numbers are the other challenges. This is attributed to the high cost of flying into Nairobi because we still charge landing fees for other airlines to come to Kenya and that affects the cost of travelling. Therefore, most ... view
  • 4 Jul 2019 in National Assembly: Having read the Report, I notice that it is about reviewing the proposal by KQ Privately Initiated Investment Proposal (PIIP). The PIIP proposed that we have a Special Purpose Vehicle that will be managed by KQ and will have 100 per cent ownership by KQ. This was another way of saying that KQ was going to take over the running operations, management and development of JKIA for 30 years. According to the Report, many of the people who appeared before the Committee were against this decision including the employees in the aviation industry who said that they were not consulted ... view
