  • 23 Jul 2013 in Senate: Thank you. At this point, I request, based on Standing Order No.51(3) to defer putting the question to tomorrow afternoon. view
  • 23 Jul 2013 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I thank you. I want to join my colleagues in congratulating Sen. Naisula Lesuuda for bringing this Motion because it touches on a mighty big number of people in this Republic of Kenya. We note that 80 per cent of the land mass in Kenya is inhabited by people who love keeping cows. We call them pastoralists. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, as I stand to contribute to this Motion, I look at the way we have developed our products in Kenya since 1963. If you can remember when the white farmers came and took the white ... view
  • 16 Jul 2013 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I join my colleagues in thanking Sen. Elachi for bringing this Motion at this time when devolution is taking root here in Kenya. We are talking about youth in Kenya, and we are talking about the NYS, which was a very good avenue for churning out skilled labour; and which was funded by the Government as opposed to the polytechnics where parents and youth themselves paid fees. We read that when the NYS was established in the late 1960s, it generated and brought up well thought and well planned syllabi where skilled labourers – tailors, masons, carpenters ... view
  • 16 Jul 2013 in Senate: and it was just manual work. We expected that this type of money would be taken to the NYS so that it can help them. I saw that a lot of donations, like buses from China, were given to the NYS, but we do not know what they do there. Mr. Speaker, Sir, I support this Motion by saying that every county should have an NYS outlet; they can even call it “County Youth Service” if they want. • 16 Jul 2013 in Senate: Madam Temporary Speaker, may I join my colleagues in thanking Sen. Zipporah Kittony for bringing this Motion at this time when we know that we are faced with a lot of environmental challenges. If we really were to talk about what is happening in Kenya today, we would feel sorry for ourselves. Our forests are depleted. Some of the natural forest covers we used to have are all gone. I remember in the 1980s and beyond, Nakuru was a very brilliant place to stay in. Lake Nakuru was full of life. But the moment the forest behind Egerton University was ... view

  • 11 Jul 2013 in Senate: On a point of order, Mr. Speaker, Sir. I rise to seek two statements under the provisions of Standing Order No.43 (2) (c). The first request is directed to the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Energy, Roads and Transportation on the following. 1. When will the Kapenguria-Kapipich-Kapsait-Kapsangar-Iten Road be tarmacked noting that it transverses West Pokot and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties, given that over 50 per cent of the economies of these counties depend on this road? TARMACKING OF KAPENGURIA-KACHELIBA-KOLOWA-ALALE- LODWAR-LOKICHOGGIO ROAD 2. When will the Kapenguria-Kacheliba-Kolowa-Alale-Lodwar-Lokichoggio Road be tarmacked, noting that about 25 to 40 per cent of the economy ... view
  • 10 Jul 2013 in Senate: Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I beg to move:- THAT, aware that Kenyans living in counties in arid areas such as West Pokot, Turkana, Baringo, Samburu, Garissa, Mandera, among others, are pastoralists who depend on livestock for their livelihood; concerned that over the years, pastoralist communities have continued to suffer loss of their animals due to diseases that are preventable; cognizant of the fact that efforts by past Governments to address the problem have not yielded desirable results; the Senate urges the National Government to urgently put in place an effective policy to create livestock disease free zones in the counties ... view
  • 10 Jul 2013 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir. You will also note that the livestock industry in Kenya plays a very crucial role in contributing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the tune of 10 per cent. If we do not sustain this and if we do not put measures such as the one I have mentioned, that is, the Kenya Disease Free Zones, we will be affected because even the food security that we talk about will not be The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposes only. • 10 Jul 2013 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I rise to join Senators who have spoken before in thanking Sen. (Prof.) Anyang’-Nyong’o for bringing this Motion at this time. If you really look at the historical videos and films of the years when Kenya began, you can see the motivation of the spirit in which the harambee movement and harambee activities started. Most of the institutions that we have in Kenya today that have produced the men and women you see here were build in the spirit of harambee. This has been done willingly from the hearts of the people of Kenya, but noting the ... view
