  • 23 Jun 2020 in National Assembly: Very well. As you exchange the seats, you have already been thanked by the Speakership for the diligent work that you have done for the last seven years but, most importantly, for the magnanimity in your handing over. In many cases, people who do this kind of handover would probably even not be available to do such. So, it is good. Probably, it is because of the fact that you are a battle-hardened politician just like the gentleman who is taking over from you. I am also informed that he is equally battle hardened. So, thank you once more, Hon. ... view

  • 6 May 2020 in National Assembly: In the meeting, we agreed on this Motion. We tried briefly to see if it works. We entered into a meeting where we had both the presence of Members and, at the same time, those Members following us virtually. It was very interesting. There are many things that we need to consider if the House passes this. That includes the rules of how we are going to be operating. In that meeting, when we were using the Zoom technology, for example, some Members at home dressed in a particular manner that I am not pin-pointing. I might only look at ... view

  • 6 May 2020 in National Assembly: There was also another Member following the meeting. She was very busy and good. Noting the age of the Member, a child who must have been a daughter participated in the meeting. As a Committee, we said that is where a non-Member or a stranger got into our meetings as we progressed... Another Member went into speaking in vernacular without knowing that she was actively being followed. We thought that, that was unparliamentary language and so forth. So, there are quite a number of things that will have to be considered once this is passed. The basic issue we are ... view
  • 6 May 2020 in National Assembly: the easier will be the issue of physical distancing. Therefore, the issue of protecting ourselves from contracting some of these diseases will be catered for. In conclusion, we hope that the House will approve these proposals to allow for the conclusion of guidelines during the recess period. This will ensure that by the time the House resumes, there will be guidelines in place for the House. I must commend a number of committees of this House that have started trying out these proposals. I know the Departmental Committee on Health did that and the Departmental Committee on Finance and National ... view
  • 6 May 2020 in National Assembly: Hon. Speaker, I want to thank my colleagues for supporting this particular Motion. I want to clarify that the Chair of the Committee is the Speaker himself. He graciously donates his powers many times. So, most of the work we do in the Committee is under his guidance as the Chair. Hon. Speaker, with those remarks, I beg to reply. view
