15 Mar 2012 in National Assembly:
Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, you have heard the Assistant Minister confirm that this amenity ward which serves nine districts in Makueni County has remained closed for the last one year or so and that he has now identified staff. Could he, as he confirms this, tell us the optimal staffing level of this facility and how many new people he is posting to open this facility, particularly the amenity ward? Could he table the list of the staffing levels, that is, the current status of those who are in post and the intended number of people that he is posting ...

Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I beg to ask the Minister for Medical Services the following Question by Private Notice. (a) Is the Minister aware of a go-slow by nurses and other medical staff in Wote District Hospital in Makueni County, which is causing a crisis in service delivery? (b) Is the Minister also aware that the only amenity ward in the hospital, which serves the whole county, has closed down? (c) What is the Government doing to avert the crisis?

Mr. Speaker, Sir, I would like to thank the Minister for giving fairly straightforward answer to parts “a’ and “b” of my Question. I am, however, worried by the answer the Minister has given for part “c’ of my Question. In his answer, the Minister has accepted that the design for this road was completed in 2007. From 2007 to last year on April 14th when this matter was revisited and the Government undertook to upgrade this road--- It is now five years. The Minister is now telling us that the Ministry is in the process of sourcing for money. ...

We do not intend to call for any more wards in that area, but we want these people to continue feeling that they are not disenfranchised. You realize that Makueni is one of those big constituencies which were not considered for a split. By moving these people when the constituency has not been split could make them feel ...
