  • 10 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: (iv) Measures to sustain political goodwill must be employed since political leaders from communities where the practice is still rampant who publicly advocate against the practice risk losing political support in their areas; (v) There is need for accurate up-to-date data on FGM prevalence since some communities like the Kuria where the practice is rampant are not captured in the policy; (vi) The approach on the fight against FGM should include de-localising teachers and medical practitioners from FGM prevalent areas to low prevalent areas for proper dissemination of the anti-FGM agenda. This will foster cultural integration which will break the ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. At the outset, let me thank all Members who have contributed, and all of them unanimously agreed that Sessional Paper No.3 of 2019 as it has come has good intentions for the women of Kenya and that they unanimously support it. It is not that we do not have legal framework to deal with FGM. It is there. It exists. Previously we had the first Sessional Paper on abandonment of FGM. Then this has now come as an improvement of the 2010 which is on the eradication of FGM. I think we must take ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: That read together with the Anti-FGM law 2010 tells us that we have come from that age where this archaic and outdated practice must come to an end. So, even as we talk about the passion to save our girls which I really associate with, we must also put in place checks and balances and also ensure that we have programmes that support the Anti-FGM Board. I have listened to a conversation here regarding married women and I got shocked just like every other Kenyan should get shocked. Some women in those communities that practice this cultural behaviour get married ... view
  • 10 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, we need money to make this work. With those many remarks, I beg to reply. view
  • 3 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. From the outset, let me thank all the Members who have contributed positively to this Motion on Sessional Paper No. 2 of 2019 on the National Policy on Gender and Development. Very many issues have been brought up. From what has been said on the Floor of the House, my Committee is now very well seized of the matters and has received enrichment of the same policy issues pertaining to women, men, boys and girls. I, therefore, thank all the Members. view
  • 3 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: Secondly, it is worth noting that this document comes 20 years after the one that was written first. It largely tries to align gender issues with the Constitution, 2010 and some of the issues that have been touched here by Members who are very excited about the BBI this afternoon. The best thing to do is to discuss that document when it comes to the House. The moment you start saying what is in there or what is not there and you have not seen the document, then you will mislead the country. The issues of economic empowerment of all ... view
  • 3 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: It is also worth noting that traditionally, women have always been suppressed. It went on until a point where I heard during coffee time that even men are suppressed. The gender equality The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposesonly. • 3 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: that is being brought out by this Sessional Paper will now cut across gender. It is not about women, men, boys or girls. It is about all of them at the same time. view
  • 3 Nov 2020 in National Assembly: As I end, I want to remind Members that this Sessional Paper gives us a platform for budgeting and gender mainstreaming like what Hon. Nyikal said. It is very important for us to be seized of the matters that are ongoing currently, especially in regard to the affirmative funds which are there like the Youth Enterprise Development Fund, the Women Enterprise Fund and the Uwezo Fund. I heard a very valid point here. When you look at all those Funds, they leave one gender of a certain age out. The men who are 35 years old are not captured anywhere. ... view
