16 Feb 2021 in Senate:
Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker. Let me also add my voice to the loss of a great friend. We worked together with Sen. Yusuf Haji in many situations right from the time of Mzee Moi, the former President of the Republic of Kenya through the time when we had some difficulties in 2007 and 2008, and he became the Minister for Defence. I was the Minster for Education. We had several issues that were bothering him at that stage. It was during his tenure and my tenure in the Ministry of Education that we created a very special relationship and ...

16 Feb 2021 in Senate:
We have seen a man, even in the Senate, when issues have tended to break the Senate, he has been one voice that has always stood firm and clear on how we must proceed. It is a tragedy that we have lost such a person in such a time. It has been a triple The electronic version of the Senate Hansard Report is for information purposesonly. tragedy for me because only yesterday, we buried another great man in the name of Hon. Simeon Nyachae, who worked in the provincial administration before he scaled his interest to politics and subsequently served in the Cabinet. All of us at one time were in the same Cabinet. A few hours later, we heard about the death of Sen. Haji. It was heartbreaking and made me to fly from Kisumu to join this eulogy of mourning this great man.

16 Feb 2021 in Senate:
In the same vein, we have lost another important Member of Parliament, the Hon. Member for Bonchari, Hon. Oroo Oyioka, who we lost last night. This month of February seems to be a catastrophic month. We mourn and send condolences to the family of the bereaved, particularly the Hon. Member Oroo Oyioka and the family of Mzee Sen. Haji. I know him as a straight forward player and nothing will come between him and the truth. Let him rest in peace.

9 Feb 2021 in Senate:
Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. First of all, let me congratulate all the Senators for coming back in one piece in this era of the pandemic. We just want to thank God that we are back in one piece. Secondly, I consider the Senate Business Committee to be one of the premier committees of this House and, therefore, I have no difficulties whatsoever with the names that have been proposed. They are men and women who will uphold the integrity of this House and be able to defend the interests of this House to the fullest. I will not even ...

elected for a particular class of people. I was elected for all the people who reside in that county. Therefore, my responsibility is to discharge my work, and representation to all these categories of people. I am saying this advisedly. I have seen of late, that this country is trooping towards class classification and that is a very dangerous trend. I want to warn in time that let us desist from that level of thinking. My interest would be that this Senate Business Committee, in fast tracking the agenda of the House, would look at the various categories of the ...

29 Dec 2020 in Senate:
Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir, for allowing me also to weigh in on this Bill. It is very interesting because just out of the historical perspective, I was the Chairman of Kenya Athletics between 1974 and 1984; for 10 years. During that period, we were in the watershed between the amateur athletic running for no payment or reward whatsoever until we introduced the professional side of it which is now the track and field though which our athletes are able to get very handsome pay for any competitive event they take part in. What happened? In 1976, we missed out ...

29 Dec 2020 in Senate:
Kenyans were natural with God-given running talent. Therefore, we became alert. I was also a member of the International Amateur Athletics Medical Commission. I knew the in-goings and out-goings of that thing. How did the mischief come in? We realized that when some - not all - of these managers realized they could take the athletes on them at the expense of the federations, they started giving them ointments that were coloured with some performance enhancing substances. It was not our athletes but others. At that time, we educated our athletes to keep off those substances because they would curtail ...

29 Dec 2020 in Senate:
I remember when we had the International Amateur Athletics Congress in Rome, I stood out in the Congress and told them that we needed to bring professionalism in athletics. I was almost thrown out of the Congress because the idea did not come through. I am glad that today that professionalism is the mainstay of earnings for our athletes. They are not only able to exhibit their talent, but to bring back home something handsome that can support them and their families, so that when they retire from track and field events, they are sustained.
