  • 8 May 2008 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, in the first place, I feel that the question is misplaced. The operation that is going on in Mt. Elgon is under the Minister of State for Provincial Administration and Internal Security. We are only giving assistance as mandated. When we are called upon to assist, we have authority to do so. So, I think this question should be directed to the Minister of State for Provincial Administration and Internal Security. May 8, 2008 PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES 937 view

(b) What steps is the Minister taking to ensure that the trading centre is supplied with water and diffuse simmering tensions between the residents of Ijara and Tana River Districts over the control of the resource? view
  • 19 Sep 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I am, indeed, very happy that the Government has now come out very clearly and stated that the water of Tana River does not belong to any community, nor does it belong to Mt. Kenya where it flows from. It is water for the country and, therefore, a natural resource. I would like the Assistant Minister to confirm that all the trading centres in Ijara District, including Bura, which is along Tana River, Masabubu, Masalani, Kochile, Hera and Korisa will be allowed to draw water from Tana River for the consumption of the local people. view
  • 19 Sep 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I hope this will not only be confined to boreholes, but we should also draw water from the river for irrigation in that part of the district. view
  • 11 Sep 2007 in National Assembly: Mr. Speaker, Sir, the Government is not yet aware that there is no single borehole in Ijara District. The people there, depend on dams. Everybody knows that when the rains fail and dams dry up, people in Ijara have no boreholes to resort to. Human beings as well as their livestock have to trek all the way to Tana River. It is also a known fact that the people of that district suffer greatly from Malaria as well as Bilharzia because of use of water dams. Recently, an investigation was carried out and it was found that treatable water can ... view
