The President has been hardly in office for six weeks. When he called a Cabinet meeting of the Cabinet Secretaries and unbanned the use of the GMO, there was absolutely no review and no explanation given as to why 10 years ago, it was bad and banned, but that decision has been reversed. There has been no public debate, no discussion, no engagement and, therefore, the use of GMO is something that is so important that it cannot be left to the President, a Cabinet of some few Cabinet Secretaries or to any other person. It is something that concerns ...

The second problem related to GMO is the cross-pollination of seeds. The seeds are controlled and produced by big technical transnational companies from abroad. The seeds are going to be very expensive first of all. The growers will have no rights and they are going to devastate the traditional cultural crops that our peasants and farmers have been planting. Therefore, that would be quite a devastating importation. Finally, is the issue of importation of GMO maize. Even if there is a necessity to import, why can we not import non-GMO maize which is all over the market? We can purchase ...

Thank you, Hon. Speaker. I would like to contribute to the Petition that has been brought by Mr. Patrick Kaberia regarding the proposal to amend the Universities Act to include the important role of the alumni. Our universities are in a terminal crisis, particularly the public universities. As he has rightful said, they are facing a serious problem of funding, and are under-performing. There is need to inject new ideas and funding to keep them going. I, therefore, think that it is important for the universities around the world to benefit from their alumni. My former university constantly writes to ...

Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker, for giving me an opportunity to speak once again and contribute to another incredibly beneficial Motion. It is presented by the legislator for Dagoretti South, Hon. KJ, who is calling on us, our institutions and system to plant trees along the road sides and road reserves. It may be very easy to forget how vital trees are in our homes and lives. As many speakers have said, trees beautify our surroundings, purify our air, act as a sound barrier, produce oxygen, provide shade and reduce pollution. So, the benefits of trees are enormous, particularly in ...

Karura Forest after her so that we can remember the role she played in protecting that major ecosystem in our capital city. It has now become a major centre of recreation and activities. I fully support my colleague KJs’ Motion. I think it is timely and important. We should pass it so that it becomes our policy on planting trees, as he has suggested along the roadsides and road reserves in this country. This is a very important Motion for reversing environmental degradation that has happened in our country over the years. Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker.

Thank you, Hon. Deputy Speaker, for the opportunity. I would like to support the Motion brought by the brilliant young Member for Dagoretti South, who is an artist himself. This is a timely and important Motion given the fact that, as a country, we have an advantage of benefitting from our youth. We have one of the youngest populations in the world. By investing in that young population, we could turn what can be a crisis into a boom. In other words, we can make young people productive contributors to the economy. Innovators, creators and talented people are out there. ...

criminals and people who undermine our economy. One of the biggest challenges we face in this country is unemployment. If we can fix the problem of unemployment, then we can fix many of our economic problems. Hon. KJ’s Motion will make a major contribution in denting that unemployment problem that we have in the country and our capital city. Therefore, I support it.

Thank you, Hon. Temporary Speaker, for the opportunity. I salute my sister, the Member of Parliament for Dagoretti North, for bringing this Motion to the House on a unified national policy for our small and micro-enterprises. This is something that should have happened yesterday. It is very necessary because at the moment, we have a very fragmented and disjointed system of helping small and micro- enterprises. To a certain extent, the right does not know what the left is doing. Successive governments have not been very serious about supporting our small and micro-enterprises. There is a lack of commitment. It ...

Hon. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 44 (2) (c), I request for a Statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Trade, Industries and Cooperatives regarding remarks made by the Cabinet Secretary for Trade, Investments and Industry that border on threatening to ban the sale of mitumba clothes in the country. The Cabinet Secretary made the remarks during the Changamka Shopping Festival, held at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Tuesday, 1st November 2022. Hon. Speaker, about two million Kenyans are dependent on the second-hand cloth industry for their everyday livelihood. These people are very concerned by the threat ...
