In my experience, most of mega projects like this dam being constructed, the public is rarely involved. There will be many socio-economic issues that will come up. People’s farms and grazing land will be displaced.   • 22 May 2024 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir. Mine is a supplementary question to the question asked by Sen. Mungatana. Farmers along River Tana, especially the lower stream, have had a lot of problems in the past and even now. Whenever it rains, the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) dams overflow and destroy all the farms in the three counties; that is, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu and part of Kilifi and Kwale. view
  • 22 May 2024 in Senate: For the last three seasons, farmers have not harvested anything. Most of the farm structures and citrus fruits have been destroyed. Is there any plan from your Ministry? Whenever there is a disaster, farmers normally get compensation or assistance just like the way you are now giving waivers and bailing out coffee farmers. Even at your backyard, the miraa farmers were bailed out last time when miraa had been stopped from Somalia and all those places. However, farmers downstream of Tana River never get compensation. The farmers are not producing anything. view

  • 21 May 2024 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir. The tea growers think they have the rights for tea only while we know that Kenyans are the highest consumers of tea. Therefore, Sen. Cherarkey should appreciate that we take a lot of tea and we are marketing it. Much has been said, but the Kenyan tea is of high value. The unfortunate thing is that it is being monopolised by the multinationals that are growing it.
