Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, I take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues who have contributed to this Motion. I would like to wind up by quoting the former United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Mr. Koffi Annan who said: "Educating girls is a social development policy that works. It is a long-term investment that yields unexceptionally high results." I, therefore, call upon the Kenyan Government and this Parliament to realise that education of girls is not a waste in any form. On the contrary, it is a very high yielding economic activity. I would like to take this opportunity to ...

Thank you, Mr. Temporary Deputy Speaker, Sir, for giving me an opportunity to contribute to the Presidential Speech. I thank the President for the Speech. However, at the same time, I would like to point out that in this country, corruption, bad governance and all the ills in this society, including ethnicity, need to be fought by all of us as Kenyans. One way we can fight these ills is through civic education. Ordinary Kenyans do not know what constitutes good governance. They need to be educated about corruption. He will then 98 PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES March 22, 2007 know that ...

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. I take this opportunity to thank the Assistant Minister. However, he is misleading the House by saying that the river has subsided. I was unable to drive over the bridge this morning because the water is overflowing the bridge. He has also misled the House by saying that the Sio Bridge drainage channel needs to be cleared. The problem is that the bridge is low and, therefore, the water level rises and passes over it. What has the Assistant Minister done to raise the level of the bridge so that when the water level rises, ...

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. I would like the Assistant Minister to stop misleading the House. The problem is that the bridge is low. The engineers from Mumias and I visited the area last week. The engineers recommended that the height of the bridge should be raised. They did not talk about the drainage system which is not the problem. Could the Assistant Minister give the House the timeframe within which that bridge will be raised?

and kumi kumi combined with poor nutrition causes more harm to the society than otherwise. Therefore, this needs to be addressed. We need to put more money into research on nutrition and foodstuffs. Above all, we need to have food and drug regulation so that we do not just swallow anything. This is because a lot of things come to our markets. There are now a lot of biological substances that have come into the market as food additives. Many people take them without the doctor's advice. They go to the shelves and buy them. They eat the so-called "multi-vitamins" ...
