I am a bit concerned because 50 years later, we made the same mistake when we established devolved governments without looking ... view

  • 25 Mar 2015 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I will not take more than the two minutes you have given me and I am not going to belabour my reasons for supporting this very appropriate amendments. I just want to draw our attention to Section 9 of the National Environmental Management Authority Act, No. 8 of 1999, which is also proposed to be amended. • 25 Mar 2015 in Senate: Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, I rise to second this Bill. I will not belabour to repeat all the points that have been raised by the Mover. If you read this Bill and all the provisions contained therein, you will realise that if this Authority is given the extensive powers that it has been given here and the extensive mandate that it now has, then drought should be a thing of the past in this country. Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, a nation that cannot feed itself cannot pride in calling itself an independent nation. With the persistent perennial drought that we ... view

  • 24 Feb 2015 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir. I will not belabor my points. I am in support of this Bill. It has been said before and I think everybody knows that apart from maize in this country, potatoes are ranked number two as a staple food. In terms of the consumption rates, this crop has the capacity to not only make us food sufficient by feeding the nation, but also in creating wealth as a cash crop. However, it is really sad that the growing and the marketing of this crop – especially the marketing – and the prices of potatoes ... view
