Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, the Vice-President and Minister for Home Affairs has said that the Prime Minister spoke to me. It is a matter that I would not have wanted to bring to the attention of this House but, now that he has brought it, I think it behooves on me to tell this House what the Prime Minister was attempting to do and what I rejected. Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, this afternoon, after the adjournment of the House, I received a word that I was being summoned to the Office of the Prime Minister.

Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir, I sought guidance on what the summons were all about, and I was informed that the Prime Minister wanted to request me to defer this Motion to tomorrow. I pointed out that an attempt by the Executive Arm to summon or arm-twist the Chair of the House undermines a very important constitutional principle. The personal aide to the Prime Minister telephoned me and I had the occasion to speak to the Prime Minister and, he did agree with me that he cannot summon the Chair of the House on matters that are pending before the House, ...
