  • 2 Jul 2014 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Temporary Speaker, Sir, for giving me the opportunity. I want to say only two things about the Motion. There are many things we are talking about regarding the socio-economic set up. The bottom line is money. We are talking about an individual farmer and land owners investing money so that he has coconut that he and the country at large can benefit from 15 years from now. The Mover did not tell us how long the coconut tree takes to mature. Nonetheless, it takes a very long time. For us to encourage farmers to wait, some support ... view

  • 24 Jun 2014 in Senate: No, Mr. Deputy Speaker, Sir. I requested a Statement from the Committee on Education with regard to the predicament of the engineering students who are at the Technical University, Mombasa. This is why we need the Government to tell the Senate, or for that matter the nation, what is being done to address their predicament. The ... view
  • 18 Jun 2014 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, the fees which is charged by secondary schools has such a big variance. You will find that within the same area, whether it is a levy or whatever, you will find that there is such a big variance. Although this is a Statement coming from the Cabinet Secretary concerned, did the Committee delve into the matter and address this big variance that needs to be addressed on its own? view
  • 17 Jun 2014 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, I would like to seek a Statement from the Chairman of the Committee on Education with regard to Engineering Degree Courses offered by the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM). The TUM admitted the first batch of students for the engineering degree course in January, 2009. At that time, it was a polytechnic and not a university because it was operating as a campus of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). The engineering degree courses were word for word the JKUAT syllabus. view

  • 17 Jun 2014 in Senate: Mr. Speaker, Sir, at the end of the degree course, the students were to be graduated by the JKUAT. The TUM was given a charter sometime in 2013 and became a university in its own right. The students continued with their courses with the understanding that they would receive JKUAT degrees. They have now completed their studies and are due to graduate in June, 2014. Mr. Speaker, Sir, two things have so far transpired. One, the students are due to be graduated by the Technical University of Mombasa and not JKUAT. Two and which is more serious, the Technical University ... view
