I can tell you for sure that the NASA demonstrations were peaceful and purposeful. They only became violent when the so called Nairobi Business Community, the police and all armed forces joined the fray to basically molest, beat up people for whatever reason. Many of us were in Nairobi on 30th January when the People’s President took his oath. There was no disruption or looting. Nothing was destroyed in this country. Essentially, the problem is not the demonstrators; the problem is the Government and the security forces. How come in many occasions we have had very peaceful demonstrations and there ...

Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker. Indeed, it is not the first time that the issue of constitutionality of a Motion or Bill has been raised in this House. Not so long ago, we raised the issue of constitutionality regarding the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority Bill. Of course, common sense

However, the solutions suggested in the Report, I am afraid, may not necessarily cure the malady at the hospital. As my colleagues have mentioned before, KNH is a referral hospital. As a referral hospital, in my limited understanding of medical terms, procedures and practices, it should surely deal with referral cases that cannot be handled at lower levels. But, KNH is now more or less like a primary healthcare facility that deals with all manner of ailments and conditions. Consequently, however good a system is or however robust the management is, it is bound to fail simply because it has ...

I request the Committee to basically re-look at the Report and the House to pass a resolution or put in place measures that will ensure that KNH remains a referral hospital truly. Therefore, this obviously, calls upon the Departmental Committee on Health to look at the issue in a more critical manner or holistic way. They should probably go beyond focusing on KNH to focus on the two main referral hospitals and at the entire medical management system in this country starting from Level 1 to all the way to Level 5 hospitals. Indeed by now, Nairobi as a county ...

point of desperation always hopes he will have some remedy or salvation at KNH or Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. It is up to us as a country and leaders to invest heavily in healthcare. As much as I commend the Jubilee Government for considering universal healthcare as one of the Big Four agenda items they want to deal with, mere rhetoric without adequate investment will remain stories to be written in history books that will not have an impact on the health services in the country. It is important that the national Government enters into concerted partnerships ...

On the issue of suspension of the CEO of KNH, ideally, I sympathise with her with the hospital being what it is, but the buck always rests at the top position. When you accept to take a position at that level, ultimately, you will be hounded out in one way or the other because, I am told, KNH is a cartel. It is not very surprising that one of my old friends, Dr. Ong’ech, declined to take up the position of acting CEO knowing he was being taken to a slaughter house. Obviously, he was going to end up in ...

Thank you, Hon. Speaker for giving me this opportunity. At the outset, I rise to raise serious misgivings about the workability of this Bill. While I appreciate that the issues of transport, traffic and inconveniences caused by poor management of transport in Nairobi County are a point of concern to all of us who live in this City, I feel that the Bill, as drafted, is premature and an indictment on the management of the city affairs. The electronic version of the Official Hansard Report is for information purposes only. Acertified version of this Report can be obtained from the ...

I must confess that I have lived in the City for many years. The issues of traffic, inadequate transport and lack of service lanes remain a problem, but I believe the approach taken to solve the problems is not the right one. There is no shortage of legislation and policies to manage traffic affairs in this country. For example, just the other day, we passed the Urban Land Use Policy, the Land Use Policy and, at the moment, we are debating amendments to the Physical Planning Act that are adequate to provide solutions to the endemic problem of traffic in ...
