In the diplomatic world, if you are to appoint a young ambassador and post him to any country, they look at it negatively. So, I would urge people to understand that age is gold. When you post somebody of this seniority in age, you are taken very seriously. Those who are saying that this old generation should not be considered are wrong. He knew when to let go and in 2002, he handed over power. He knew when change was needed and in 1992, he allowed multi-party democracy. He knew how to sack because there was no stepping aside in his regime. May his soul rest in peace. view

As a Committee, we were a little disappointed as to why the Executive took its sweet time from 2016 to bring this matter for ratification. But one of the key benefits over and above what has been stated by the Members is that information received by a party may be used for other purposes and this has to come out very clearly. view

• 5 Dec 2019 in National Assembly: For instance, this Convention can be used to combat money laundering, issues of corruption and more importantly, terrorism financing. Another item that I need to bring to the attention of the Members is that when a signed State makes a request, it is supposed to act as if the subject avoiding payment taxes is a member of their country. So, this is a matter which was brought to the Committee. We felt that the delay by the Executive was not warranted and this House should ratify the Convention for the good of this country. view

• 14 Nov 2019 in National Assembly: As you may recall, the Leader of the Majority Party sometimes back stood on the Floor of the House and raised concern on the delay by the committees in processing business before them, including this Treaty that was apparently submitted to the National Assembly on 5th June 2018. I can confirm that the Treaty had not been forwarded at the time to the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations for processing for ratification.
