  • 20 Mar 2018 in Senate: That is the feeling that you get. Even at the time when you were quoting those elements of Tom Mboya or “TJ”, as we used to call him, it is because we were all in one boat. When this flag was decided upon, I remember, as students, we wrote to Lancaster House on the issue of land because we felt that we were totally alienated from the possession of land in our own motherland. • 15 Mar 2018 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. I would like to welcome the three delegations; one from Uganda, the other from our neighbour, Kericho County and Kiambu County. Like my colleagues who have spoken before me, I have very sweet memories of Uganda, having spent my formative years from 1952 to 1957 there. I did not come back with a wife, but to the extent that I became very fluent in Luganda language; view
  • 15 Mar 2018 in Senate: . That is the language saying thank you very much and welcome for being with us. Mr. Speaker, Sir, with regards to our visitors from the county assemblies, we are happy and grateful that you are able to come and see what we do here. We have recently had very tumultuous sessions, but you can appreciate that we are now taking another path which is guaranteeing us peace as we transact our Business in this House. So, it is good to benchmark with what we are doing, as Senators, in this august House. Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. view
  • 15 Mar 2018 in Senate: Thank you, Mr. Speaker, Sir. I commend the Chairperson of the Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights. We would have wanted to see these issues of historical injustices dealt with in a wholesome manner. The case of Kericho and the one of the Mau Mau have gone through. However, there are many others that we need to look into so that this country can take time to heal. For instance, we also have the historical injustices which were meted out against the Kisii community, where my grandfather was killed holding a shield, thinking it can protect him against ... view

  • 13 Mar 2018 in Senate: Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker, Sir. Earlier on, I had the occasion to meet the delegation during the meeting of the Committee on Lands, Environment and Natural Resources. I add my voice in welcoming them to this august House and congratulate them for coming here to see how we deliberate on national issues. Mr. Speaker, Sir, on the Pan-African idea, during our student days in the 1950s and 1960s, it was quite clear that we had not been able to move closer to each other. The proponents of the Pan-Africanist movement at that time, who included Kwame Nkrumah and ... view
  • 13 Mar 2018 in Senate: Thank you, Madam Temporary Speaker, for the opportunity to contribute towards the Assumption of Office of the County Governor Bill (Senate Bills No. 1 of 2018). Madam Temporary Speaker, there was almost a near collapse of the functions of county governments, particularly when we had the most unfortunate situations where we either lost the governor or where the deputy governor resigned abruptly without any reason or for whatever reason there might have been. One of the things that I have seen in county governments is the haphazard manner in which county resources are handled, particularly towards the period of elections ... view
  • 8 Mar 2018 in Senate: Thank you Mr. Speaker, Sir. Let me also add my voice to that of my colleagues in congratulating this very wonderful school. Sen. Faki has just reminded me that I was one of the Ministers who announced Sen. Farhiya’s results, and she now finds herself in this House. It is a very pleasant surprise that you performed exceedingly well. Let me also put it on record that my firstborn daughter is also an alumnus of Alliance Girls’ High School, Kikuyu. She is one of our top performers and is currently a Chief Executive of an oil company. Therefore, the school ... view
