  • 13 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: We have interacted with some of the Members who have served there and they have shown that if you are not up to the task, you will not deliver. We do not want to nominate people because they are looking for jobs. We are looking for people who can do the necessary representation for the respective countries. Other countries have done their bit. We, as a nation, are lagging behind but we now need to finalise this process. Tomorrow, we must put aside our parochial interests and do our job. With those remarks, I support. view
  • 13 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: I thank you, Hon. Speaker for giving me this chance to contribute to this Bill. I represent an urban constituency. This failure to plan has caused a great deal of a mess in some of the settlement areas where you find people in residential houses have no roads, no sewer lines and many other things. When you look at the old estates that were started in Nairobi, mostly in Eastlands, you realise that they were properly planned. They were done with amenities also being provided. These days developers come up with plans that have no direction. You find houses being ... view
  • 13 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for this chance. I also want to congratulate Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi for bringing this important Motion. One of the things that we must observe is the way our roads are constructed and the way we manage them. One, our roads are not properly marked. Number two is signage. If you go to many countries, the signage is very important. It warns the driver. It gives the driver information. It allows the driver to be able to control speed or even know that the area he is approaching has a particular feature or speed limit. ... view
  • 13 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: There is also road unworthiness of vehicles. The transport inspection unit should make sure they inspect these vehicles regularly, especially long-distance vehicles, so that they are in proper mechanical condition before they are put on the roads. The other element that we must be checking is the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). When they came they were doing very well, but they have also developed the manners of the police where they jump on the road and start chasing after vehicles and doing all manner of things that lead to these accidents. One of the tragedies that happened over ... view
  • 6 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: Thank you, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker for giving me a chance to also support this Motion. Way back in the 1980s when I was in primary school there was a special day set aside to plant trees in schools during the era of President Moi. This day was crafted with a very special message, that when you plant a tree it is life. We were made to understand that if that tree dies, then you also die. We made sure we took care of the trees until they grew. This activity has since disappeared and died. view
  • 6 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: If you want to know the seriousness of deforestation in this country, just fly in a helicopter over the Mau Forest. You will see how dangerous deforestation is. The only natural forest which still exists is the Kakamega Forest and maybe a few others in other places. That forest is still intact and I must congratulate the people of that area for conserving it. We should be encouraged to plant trees so as to save our environment. The late Hon. Prof. Wangari Maathai used to say that there is nothing as unforgiving as nature and when you destroy nature, it ... view
  • 6 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: The Western countries have polluted the universe and they are now using money to protect themselves and are pushing this agenda to us in Africa. Africans must rise up and must not allow this to happen. These people are coming to Africa and descending on the Congo Forest which is the only remaining rainforest in Africa and destroying it at an alarming rate. We must now borrow a leaf. We heard from the Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai about taking care of our environment and this has not reflected on us. She used to campaign and tell us that we must ... view
  • 6 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: When the former Right Hon. Prime Minister, Raila Odinga came up with a plan to save the Mau, he lost support from the Rift Valley region. This is because the Members of Parliament from that region did not support that idea, because it would affect the people who had settled in the Mau. Sometimes, we must make drastic decisions when we want to save the environment. We should look at how we should protect the Mara Wildlife Conservancy because river Mara water towers are being destroyed. Looking at Nairobi, part of it is well covered by trees and the other ... view
  • 6 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: Trees are life and we must invest heavily in them. Anywhere in the world, nowadays taking care of the environment is the big thing. It is even bigger than investing in other sectors of the economy. We must give the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resource enough money and especially the National Environment Management Agency (NEMA). This is because people are destroying our wetlands. Development in Nairobi is haphazard and everywhere you go there is construction on riverbeds and waterways. We should look for ways on how to protect our ecosystem so that we do not lose our way. The ... view
  • 6 Dec 2017 in National Assembly: I support this Motion and we should introduce a Bill that will become an Act of Parliament or even amend the Environment Act to make sure that this matter is taken seriously as it deserves and tree planting becomes a way of life. Thank you. view
