Zuleikha is grateful that her father’s postings abroad exposed her to a myriad of opportunities, which impacted on her life positively. While studying in South Africa, she recalls that she went through the stages of anger over apartheid. The realization of Zuleikha that one needed to be in politics to influence policy formulation prompted her to join politics. Initially, Zuleikha sought the Kaloleni parliamentary seat but was dissuaded. In parliament she has pushed the government to fund the National Youth Council.

Yes, I made it. I was on Mombasa Road and there was traffic jam, but I have made it. I have come from Kwale right now. Thank you.

Thank you, Hon. Speaker. I rise to ask Question No. 24 of 2020 to the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation: (i) Who are the direct beneficiaries of the water supply from Mwache Dam which was to be constructed by the national Government in Kwale County? (ii) Why were the residents of Kinango Constituency, where the dam is located, not considered as priority beneficiaries, and could the Ministry consider urgently providing water to the said residents? (iii) When will the residents of Mwache area in Kwale County, who were displaced to pave way for the construction of the dam ...

Tunashukuru kuwa Bwana Matiang’i alisimamisha kazi ...

Thank you, Hon. Speaker. Pursuant to Standing Order No.44(2)(c), I wish to request for a Statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security regarding illegal eviction of people in Kwale County. Hon. Speaker, a contingent of officers from the General Service Unit led by the Deputy County Commissioner for Lungalunga Sub-County conducted an alleged illegal operation to evict residents of Kanana, Nguzo A, Nkaphu and Pongwe areas of Kwale County from their ancestral land to allegedly pave way for expansion of land for Kwale International Sugar Company Limited. It is against this background that I ...

Ahsante, Mhe. Tupinge pendekezo ...

Thank you very much, Hon. Temporary Deputy Speaker, for this opportunity. I stand to support this Bill because as many Members have said, having gender parity within our Parliament will definitely bring progress to our country because of representation of the population of the country. I always use the example of families. At the family level, a simple meeting or hosting of visitors cannot be done without the women of the family being consulted. A wedding or funeral cannot be done or be successful without women being involved in decision-making for the event. So, how about a nation? A country ...

On complaints against the Bill, some have said that there is a danger that nominated Members, who are expected to be mostly women, will not be properly nominated or chosen by their parties. If political parties do not nominate properly, there is also an equal danger for the parties that do that to also choose constituency leaders in a way that is not fair. What stops a party from giving a ticket to somebody unfairly to stand for election for a constituency seat? That point does not hold any water.

In addition, I would like to say like some other Members who have spoken and who had previously been nominated that I was elected by my party to be part of the party organs in 2008 and I became the deputy chair for the youth for my party, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). In 2011, I was chosen as the national youth coordinator for the same party. Because of the work I did for my party in 2013, I was nominated to Parliament to represent young people. That platform definitely assisted me and in 2017, I ran for the Kwale County ...

Nomination is not just a freebie. Our current President, Uhuru Kenyatta, was a nominated Member of Parliament in his first term in 2001. After that, in 2002, he ran for a constituency seat and succeeded. His political successes have been seen and he is now the President of the country. So, nomination does not give a platform to women only to progress politically and contribute to the progress of the country, but it also does the same to men as well. The President is a very good example of how nomination can propel you in politics. The electronic version of ...
